Modules
E1 - Little Black Book
In this session we will spend a little time discussion and demonstrating the essential techniques and theories of bookbinding and explore the materials and their properties in detail. We will make a simple limp pamphlet style binding where cutting, collating, sewing and gluing skills will be used.
E2 - Journal
A hard-bound traditional six-section case binding. Using our knowledge from Module 1, we will move on to produce a quarter-cloth case binding (cloth spine and decorative paper boards). In addition to the skills learned in E1 we will learn how (and why) to make a rounded spine using a backing hammer, how to sew multiple sections of paper together to make a book block and how to use a Vertical Plough to trim your book. A variety of cloths and papers will be available to create a book unique to yourself. The journal will be finished with a leather label to the cover which you will produce on the gold blocking machine.
E3 - Leather Sketch Book
This leather wrap around book will be made using Hide, a thick & sturdy leather. The pages will be folded and cut using a paper knife to create deckled edged signatures which will be sewn into the leather giving us an decorative, exposed stitched spine with out using any glues.
E4 - Japanese Note Book
Using a bookbinders hammer and a Japanese Stab Awl, we will make a traditional Japanese style notebook with a hinged hard cover and an exposed decorative sewn spine. They will be covered in beautiful Chiyogami decorative papers of your choice.
E5 - Photograph Album
We will create a traditional photograph album from scratch using folding, collating, sewing and gluing skills. Each page will feature 'guards' that stop the album from swelling when filled with photos. The spine will be rounded using a backing hammer. This will then be bound into a quarter cloth case using a variety of materials from Europe and Japan. The album will be finished with a leather label to the cover which you will produce on the gold blocking machine.
When any of the courses are purchased you qualify for for a 10% discount online or in store on all purchases made at Southampton Row for 1 year.
