BEGINNER’S

The more in-depth
two day course will involve;
sewing a multi signature book as well as learning
about different covering techniques
for traditional binding Students will also
learn how to create a box structure
to protect and present their books.
All
materials are included, a short break for lunch will take place in the early
afternoon
and tea and coffee will be available all day.

INTERMEDIATE
BOOKBINDING (FULL LEATHER CASE BINDING) £210.00

The case
binding is a way of making books where the cover (the case)
is made separately
from the textblock and then attached to it,
as opposed to fine bindings where
the boarding and covering is done on the book.
This course will cover the
following: making up endpapers, sewing on tapes,
rounding, backing,making a
hollow, covering with leather, casing in.
The course is open only to
participants with some knowledge in bookbinding
(having followed the beginners
class is a plus)
and is an ideal intermediate course to the fine binding
masterclass.

FINE LEATHER MASTERCLASS £360.00

Gregwah
This intensive courses will demonstrate fine binding forwarding
techniques.
The courses are taught by Courtney Gregwah, a highly
experienced craftsmen based at our London
bindery.
On the first day you will be shown how to prepare ‘made’ endpapers and
the book’s boards,
be taught rounding and backing, making a hollow for the
spine, and lacing on boards.
On the second day you will learn how to prepare
your leather for covering,
including tool preparation and paring
techniques.
Please note that you are encouraged to bring your own
books to work on these coursesbut
we recommend leaving the books with us for at
least a few days so
that they can dry out and press properly.
Books can
be left in the press and sent to you by post at a later date for a small postal
charge.
The course will show you how to cover your book with prepared leather
on the first day,
during which you will learn how to pleat corners, form
headcaps and set joints.
On the second day you will see how to trim the
leather out,
fill the boards and put the endpapers down.

BOXMAKING £210.00

Elbel
Two types of
boxes will be made in this course: a solander box (also called clamshell
box),
which is the most secure way of storing books for it isolates it
completely from dust,light, humidity etc…
; and a slipcase, which has the
advantage of keeping the book spine visible once it’s on the shelf.
The solander
box will be made on the first day, using pre-cut materials.
Participants will
learn how to construct the body of the box,cover it with Buckram
and line it
with paper.On the second day participants will create a slipcase for their own
individual book,
which will also teach them how to measure the different parts
of the box.

AN INTRODUCTION TO
CONSERVATION/RESTORATION £245.00

This two day course you will learn how to
repair cloth books saving original materials and bindings where possible,
and
rebacking and repairing them in a sympathetic way. The course covers the
repair of endpapers,
corner repairs and refurbishing. Materials and books to
practice on will be provided,
but you are encouraged to bring your own books to
work on.

THE ART OF PAPERMAKING £210.00

Handmade paper as a medium has become
popular in current art and design practice
because of its tremendous
versatility.
Learn how to create individualized papers that can be used for
book making,
etching, chine colle and many other arts practice techniques.

cover the basics of Western papermaking using abaca and recycled papers.

covered will include pigmenting, pulp painting, inclusions,
simple

RUBBER
STAMPING COURSE £50.00

This course
covers the skills involved in creating rubber stamp designs and prints.
Students
will learn how to adapt a design into a rubber stamp,
by taking an erasers and
using blades to cut out the desired image.
No experience is nessesary and
creativity and experimentation is encouraged.
The course will firstly focus on
creating single stamp designs but will also exploring the possibilities
of
using multiple stamps to create larger designs and patterns.
Students will also
look at the different papers that can be worked on and
will experiment on
different surfaces,
which will give your design a different feel and look.We ask
each student to bring some ideas and sketches to work from.
These images should
be no bigger than a playing card.

MONO PRINT

Mono Print
is one of the most immediateand versitile forms of print making.
Illustrator and
painter Lewis Campbell will show you the basics of mono print,
enabling you to
explore your ideas and experiment on a variety of different papers.
By the end
of the day workshop you will be able to bind your mono prints
in to a small
booklet to be taken home.

PRINT GOCCO WORKSHOP £60.00

Lamb
Print Gocco is a Japanese color screenprinting system
developed in 1977 by Noboru Hayama.
Resembling a toy, the compact and
completely self-contained printer is clean, quick and easy to use.
The system
works using flash bulbs, a carbon-based image or photocopy and an
emulsion-coated screen.
When the bulbs are manually flashed, the carbon in the
drawing or photocopy burns the screen into a stencil.
Students will be able to experiment with their designs
and
create multi coloured designs and images. All materials are included.

PAPER POP-UP

A course in how to make pop-up cards. You will learn several techniques
commonly used in pop-up books
to create 3D effects and movement, including
straight and curved chapes and pull tab mechanisms.
You will also get aquainted
with the most useful tools and materials for making beautiful pop-up cards.
We
will use white and coloured card,
but if you have any images you would like to
incorporate in your pop-up cards, please bring them.

AN INTRODUCTION TO ORIGAMI £50.00

This one-day course will give you an introduction to the
traditional Japanese paper craft origami.
The best-known origami creature is
the crane, but there is much more to it!
At the end of the day, everybody will have a collection of
origami designs to take home with them,
and you will know how to read the
symbols commonly used in origami instructions.
This course is for beginners, no
previous knowledge is necessary!

PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP £50.00

You will be building a pinhole camera (camera obscura),
pushing the perception of what a camera should look like
and leave the coursewith a knowledge of how to develop your own unique images.

We will work with both pens and brushes,
learn the pen angle and
progress through patterns to write out a basic alphabet,
experimenting
in both black and coloured inks on papers supplied by Falkiner/Shepherd.
We will design a monogram and if time allows us, we will play with
texture.
